〜がち

N2

tend to, be prone to (usually something undesirable)

Formation: V-ます stem + がち; N + がち; がちだ / がちな + N / がちに

Says that something happens often or easily, usually something negative that people do or suffer without meaning to: forgetting, getting ill, falling behind. It describes a frequent tendency, not a deliberate habit, so you would not say 毎朝ジョギングしがちだ. Only a limited set of nouns take it, such as 病気がち, 留守がち, 遠慮がち and 曇りがち. It is neutral and common in both speech and writing, and ありがちな ('all too common, typical') is a set phrase. Compare 〜気味, which describes a slight condition right now (風邪気味), while がち is about how often something happens. 〜きらいがある is more formal and criticises a trait of character.

Variants: がちだ、がちな、がちの、がちに、ありがちな
