〜から成る

N1

consist of, be made up of

Formation: N + から成る / からなる (sentence end or before a noun: N + から成る + N); から成っている; formal linking form から成り

〜から成る states what parts or members make up a whole: an organisation, a structure, a document or a set. It is formal and written, typical of textbooks, reports, legal texts and news. Here 成る means 'be composed of', not 'become' (になる), and it is often written in hiragana as からなる. It is used for components, not raw materials. For what something is physically made of, use 〜でできている or 〜から作られる. The close synonym 〜で構成される is equally formal but passive and slightly more technical.

Variants: 〜からなる、〜から成っている、〜から成り
