〜に値する

N1

be worth (doing), deserve

Formation: N + に値する; V-dictionary + に値する; noun-modifying: 〜に値する + N; negative: 〜に値しない

〜に値する says that something has enough value to merit a certain response. It often follows nouns of evaluation such as 称賛, 尊敬, 注目, 検討 and 一読, and less often a dictionary-form verb (読むに値する). Usually it praises, but it can also say something deserves blame (非難に値する), and in the negative it dismisses something as not worth the response. The register is formal and written, typical of reviews, editorials and reports. Compare 〜に足る, which means 'enough to justify' and mostly follows verbs (信頼するに足る). Also compare 〜に堪える, which says something can stand up to being read or watched and is often negative (見るに堪えない).

Variants: に値しない、に値する + N
