〜に反して

N2

contrary to (expectations); in violation of (a rule)

Formation: N + に反して/に反し; N + に反する/に反した + N; typical nouns: 予想, 期待, 予報, 意図, 願い, 規則, 法律

This pattern has two uses. In the first, a result turns out the opposite of an expectation, prediction or wish (予想に反して). In the second, an action goes against a rule, law or someone's will (法律に反する). It is formal and common in news reports and written texts, and に反し is the more written form. Its noun is usually a word for expectation or a norm. Compare 〜に対して, which simply contrasts two things side by side, and 〜にもかかわらず, which says something happens despite a stated condition and can follow whole clauses.

Variants: に反し、に反する、に反した
