〜に引き換え

N1

in contrast to, unlike (subjective, often critical comparison)

Formation: N + に引き換え; V / い-adj plain + のに引き換え; な-adj + な/である + のに引き換え; conjunction: それに引き換え

〜に引き換え contrasts two things that are clearly opposite. Usually one is good and the other bad, and the speaker is openly judging, often criticizing the second item or lamenting it. It is most often used to compare people (siblings, colleagues, oneself and others) or two periods. It appears in both writing and conversation, and それに引き換え at the start of a sentence is especially common. Compare 〜に対して, which is a neutral, objective contrast suited to reports. 〜に反して means 'contrary to' an expectation or rule rather than a comparison of two items.

Variants: それに引き換え、に引き換えて、のに引き換え
