Formation: N + に代わって / に代わり; N + に代わる + N

〜に代わって has two main uses. Its first use is replacement, where something new takes over the role of X: 石油に代わるエネルギー. Its second is acting on behalf of a person who cannot act themselves, as in 社長に代わってご挨拶申し上げます, which is common in speeches and formal settings. Overall the register is fairly formal. Compare 〜代わりに (Nの代わりに), which is broader: it attaches to verbs and adjectives and can also mean 'in exchange for' or 'but on the other hand', meanings 〜に代わって does not have.
