〜に加えて

N2

in addition to, on top of

Formation: N + に加えて / に加え; V / い-adj plain form + こと/の + に加えて; な-adj: 〜なこと/なの + に加えて; N: 〜であること + に加えて

〜に加えて adds a further item of the same kind to X. Often both items are problems, or both are merits, and the second item is typically marked with も. It is somewhat formal and typical of news, reports and essays; in casual speech people tend to say 〜だけじゃなく. Compare 〜上に, which attaches directly to verbs and adjectives and often stresses that things pile up. 〜ばかりか adds surprise ('not only X but even Y'), and 〜はもちろん treats X as obvious. 〜に加えて is the most neutral of these.

Variants: に加え
