〜において/における

N2

in, at (formal: place, time, field); in terms of

Formation: N + において / においては / においても; N + における + N (less often においての + N)

〜において is a formal equivalent of で. It marks the place, time, situation or field in which something happens or holds true, and it can also mean 'in terms of' (この点において). It belongs to written and formal language such as reports, announcements, academic writing and speeches, and sounds stiff in casual talk. It only replaces the で of setting. It cannot stand in for the に of existence or destination, so you cannot say 東京においている or 駅において行く. The noun-modifying form における is extremely common in titles and academic prose (現代社会における〜). Unlike 〜に関して, which means 'about, concerning', 〜において gives the setting or domain, not the topic.

Variants: における、においては、においても、においての、に於いて
