〜に及ぶ

N2

reach, extend to, amount to (stressing large scale)

Formation: N (number, period, area, scope) + に及ぶ / に及んだ; N + に及ぶ + N; continuative に及び

〜に及ぶ says that a quantity, duration or range reaches as far as X. It usually stresses that X is large or wider than expected: a meeting lasting eight hours, damage spreading across a whole region, tens of thousands of participants. It is common in news reports and formal writing. The noun is a figure, period or extent, not a goal someone sets out to reach. Compare 〜にわたって, which describes an action or state spread over a span (三日にわたって雨が降った), while 〜に及ぶ stresses the point the total reaches. 〜に至る describes reaching a stage or result after a process. Also keep it separate from 〜に及んで (when things came to the point of) and 〜には及ばない (there is no need to; is no match for).

Variants: に及んだ、に及び、に及ぶ + N
