〜に際して

N2

on the occasion of, at the time of (a special event)

Formation: N + に際して / に際し; V-dictionary + に際して; N + に際しての + N

〜に際して marks a special, usually one-time occasion (opening, departure, signing a contract, joining a group) and says what is done or needed at that time. It is formal and typical of announcements, instructions, speeches and business writing. It is not used for routine, everyday events, so 朝ご飯を食べるに際して sounds odd. It is very close to 〜にあたって and often interchangeable with it. にあたって leans more toward facing or preparing for an important task with a certain attitude, while に際して focuses on the occasion itself. Unlike 〜に先立って, which stresses that something is done beforehand, に際して covers the time of the event.

Variants: に際し、に際しては、に際しての
