〜に足る
N1worthy of, enough to (justify)
Formation: V-dictionary + に足る + N; N (する-noun) + に足る + N; predicate: 〜に足りる/に足りない; set phrase: 取るに足らない
This pattern says that something is good enough, or has enough grounds, to deserve an action or judgment, as in 信頼に足る人物 ('a person worthy of trust'). It is formal and written. It is usually used before a noun, while predicates more often use 足りる. The negative 〜に足りない/に足らない means 'not worth', and the set phrase 取るに足らない means 'trivial, not worth bothering about'. It is very close to 〜に値する. 〜に値する is more about value judgment ('deserves praise'), while 〜に足る stresses being enough to meet a standard. 〜に堪える means 'can withstand' an evaluation, such as 鑑賞に堪える ('worth looking at').
Variants: 〜に足りる、〜に足りない/に足らない、取るに足らない
Examples
- 彼は信頼に足る人物だと思う。
I think he is someone you can trust. - その結論を裏付けるに足る証拠はまだない。
There is not yet enough evidence to support that conclusion. - そんな噂は取るに足らないものだ。
Rumours like that aren't worth bothering about.
