〜には及ばない

N1

there is no need to; is no match for

Formation: V-dictionary + には及ばない; N (心配・礼 etc.) + には及ばない; polite: には及びません; N + には(遠く/到底)及ばない (no match)

There are two uses. First, after a verb or nouns like 心配 or お礼, it means 'there is no need to', often used politely to decline someone's offer or reassure them (ご心配には及びません). In this sense it is formal and common in business speech and letters. Second, after a person or ability, it means 'can't match' or 'falls short of', often with 遠く or 到底. Compare 〜ことはない, a plainer, more everyday 'no need to'. 〜までもない means there's no need because something is obvious. 〜には当たらない means a reaction such as surprise or criticism isn't warranted.

Variants: 〜には及びません、ご心配には及びません、〜には遠く及ばない、足元にも及ばない
