〜によって/により

N2

by (agent / means); due to; depending on

Formation: N + によって/により; V-dictionary + こと + によって; N + による + N; N + によっては (in some cases)

〜によって has four main uses: the agent of a passive, especially with verbs of creating, discovering or deciding (作家によって書かれた, 発見された); a means or method (話し合いによって解決する); a cause (大雨により運休); and 'depending on' (国によって違う), where the main clause must express variation with words like 違う, 異なる, 変わる or さまざまだ. 〜によっては means 'in some cases' and points to one particular case out of many (人によっては眠くなる). により is the more formal, written form, common in news and official notices; による is the form used before a noun (大雨による被害). With verbs of creation the agent must take によって, not plain に (×漱石に書かれた), although in everyday passives like 先生に叱られた plain に is normal. Compare 〜次第で, where the outcome hinges on how X turns out, 〜に応じて, where something is adjusted to match X, and the separate pattern 〜によると/によれば, which cites a source ('according to').

Variants: により、による、によっては
