〜のもとで/のもとに

N2

under (someone's guidance, a condition, a name or banner)

Formation: N + のもとで; N + のもとに; N + のもと、 (written); N + のもとでの + N; also written の下で/の下に

〜のもとで means under the guidance, supervision or protection of a person (先生の指導のもとで), or under certain conditions or surroundings (厳しい条件のもとで, 青空のもと). 〜のもとに is used mostly in fixed, formal phrases that give a basis or justification, such as 〜の名のもとに (in the name of), 〜という前提のもとに and 合意のもとに. The two forms overlap a lot, and sources differ on how strictly to separate them. The pattern is formal and common in writing and speeches. When it is written with the kanji 下, the reading is もと; read as した (木の下で), the same kanji just means physically underneath. Do not confuse it with 〜をもとに, which means 'based on' or 'using as material' (資料をもとに).

Variants: のもとに、のもと、のもとでの、の下で
