〜おかげで

N2

thanks to, because of (a good result); ironically, a bad one

Formation: V-plain (often V-た) / い-adj / な-adj + な / N + の + おかげで; sentence-final: 〜おかげだ

Gives the cause of a good result, usually with a sense of gratitude toward the person or thing responsible. It can also be used sarcastically for a bad result, as in English "thanks to you", which sounds resentful. It is common in both speech and writing, and the main clause states a result that has happened or is happening, not a request or an intention. Compare 〜せいか, which suggests a possible cause with uncertainty and traditionally points to a bad result, and 〜ばかりに, which blames one single cause for an unfortunate outcome, often with regret.

Variants: 〜おかげだ、〜おかげか、おかげさまで
