〜次第だ/次第で

N2

depends on; depending on (X decides the outcome)

Formation: N + 次第だ; N + 次第で / 次第では; question clause (〜か(どうか)) + 次第だ

Says that X is the deciding factor for an outcome: whether Y happens or how it turns out depends on X. 次第では picks out one possible outcome, often a less expected one ("depending on X, it may even..."). It is used in both speech and writing. Compare 〜によって, which can also just describe variation (国によって習慣が違う); 次第 is not used for that and stresses that X decides the result. 〜に応じて means adjusting to X, and 〜いかんで is a more formal equivalent of 次第で.

Variants: 〜次第では、〜次第によっては、〜次第の + N
