〜たる(もの)
N1anyone who is (X) (should); befitting one who is (X)
Formation: N + たるもの(は)/たる者(は); N + たる + N
Comes from the classical copula たり. It takes a role or status that carries high standards, such as teacher, doctor, politician or leader, and says what anyone in that position must or should be. The main clause is usually 〜べきだ, 〜なければならない or 〜てはならない. It is formal and somewhat old-fashioned, found in speeches, editorials and moral essays. Compare 〜ともあろう(者が), which criticizes a particular person of high status for failing to meet those standards, with surprise or disappointment; たるもの states the ideal in general. 〜として simply names a role and carries none of this sense of duty.
Variants: たる者、たるもの、N + たる + N
