たとえ〜ても

N2

even if (X were the case), (Y still holds)

Formation: たとえ + V-て form + も; たとえ + い-adj (〜くて) + も; たとえ + na-adj / N + でも

たとえ〜ても sets up a supposition, usually hypothetical, and says the main clause stays true even if it happens. たとえ is an adverb that announces in advance that a concession is coming, so it makes 〜ても stronger. The main clause is often the speaker's firm resolve or an unchanging rule. It is used in both speech and writing. たとえ can also go with 〜としても, which is more clearly hypothetical, or with the N1 pattern 〜(よ)うと/(よ)うが, which is more literary. Unlike いくら〜ても, which stresses degree (no matter how much), たとえ stresses the supposition itself.

Variants: たとえ〜でも、たとえ〜としても、たとえ〜(よ)うと
