〜としたら/とすれば

N2

if, supposing that (X is the case)

Formation: Plain form + としたら/とすれば/とすると; N / な-adj + (だ) + としたら; sentence-initial だとしたら/だとすれば

This pattern sets up a premise that is uncertain or contrary to fact and reasons from it. It often goes with もし or 仮に, and the main clause is a judgment, guess or question. It is not used for things that are sure to happen (春になったら, not 春になるとしたら). Of the forms, とすれば and とすると sound more logical and written, while としたら also allows wishes (生まれ変われるとしたら鳥になりたい). Do not confuse it with N + にしたら/にすれば, which means 'from X's point of view'. 〜としても (even if) leads to a result that does not change because of the premise.

Variants: とすれば、とすると、だとしたら、とするなら
