〜として

N2

as (in the role, capacity or status of)

Formation: N + として; N + としての + N; N + としては (as for / speaking as X)

This pattern names the role, position, status or purpose in which someone or something acts or is treated (通訳として, 病院として). It is neutral and used in all registers. としては gives a view from a standpoint (私としては, speaking for myself). 〜にしては carries surprise that something goes against what you'd expect of X, while として simply states the role. 〜にしたら/にすれば and にとって mark whose point of view is meant, not what role they play. The form 一人として〜ない means 'not a single one', and V-(よ)うとして means 'trying to'. Both are separate constructions.

Variants: としての、としては、としても、とした
