〜とともに

N2

together with; as (one change brings another); at the same time as

Formation: N + とともに; V-dictionary + とともに; N / な-adj + である + とともに; い-adj + とともに (rare)

〜とともに has three related uses. It can mean 'together with' a person or thing (家族とともに), the formal equivalent of 一緒に. With nouns or verbs of change it means 'as X changes, Y changes too' (時代とともに). After である or a verb it can mean 'at the same time as / as well as' (首都であるとともに). It is written and formal, typical of news, speeches and essays; in conversation people say と一緒に or につれて. 〜につれて and 〜に従って only describe gradual change that grows in proportion, while 〜に伴って usually links two nouns or changes where one brings about the other. 〜とともに is broader: it also covers simple accompaniment and two facts holding true at once, which those patterns cannot express.

Variants: と共に、であるとともに
