〜上で
N2after (first) doing X, then Y; in (doing), when it comes to
Formation: V-た + 上で; N (action noun) + の + 上で ('after'); V-dictionary + 上で; N + の + 上で ('in doing, in the area of')
After a past-tense verb or an action noun, 〜上で means 'after first doing X, then Y'. X is a necessary step or basis for Y, typically checking, consulting or considering before a decision. Unlike 〜てから, which only gives the order of events, た上で stresses that Y is done on the basis of X. After a dictionary-form verb or a noun, 〜上で means 'in doing X, for the purpose of X' (生活する上で). It is usually followed by words like 大切だ, 必要だ or 問題がある. The pattern is formal and common in business, official instructions and essays, and in written instructions で is often dropped (ご確認の上、). Do not confuse it with 〜上に ('on top of') or 〜上は ('now that').
Variants: た上で、の上で、上での (noun-modifying: 検討した上での結論)、上では (according to, e.g. 計算の上では)、の上、 (formal, で omitted)
