〜はもちろん

N2

not to mention (X); X of course, and also Y

Formation: N (+ particle) + はもちろん(のこと), ... Y + も/まで/さえ

Presents X as the obvious case and adds Y as something that also applies, usually with も, まで or さえ in the second half. It is neutral and very common in both speech and writing; はもとより means the same but is more formal and written. Compare 〜ばかりか, which suggests that Y is surprising or goes further than expected, and 〜に限らず, which just says the statement is not limited to X. Unlike 〜をはじめ, which names X as the leading example of a group, はもちろん stresses that X goes without saying. It is also often used for praise, as in 味はもちろん (the taste, of course).

Variants: 〜はもちろんのこと、〜はもとより
