〜わりに(は)
N2considering, for (X) (the result is unexpected)
Formation: V / い-adj plain + わりに(は); な-adj + な + わりに(は); N + の + わりに(は)
Says that the result is better or worse than you would expect given X, and the gap can be good or bad. X is usually something that has a degree or scale, such as price, age, effort or size. It is common in conversation and casual writing, and adding は makes the contrast stronger. Compare 〜にしては, which mostly follows a noun or verb and measures against the standard for a specific category (子どもにしては, 'for a child'). わりに is more natural with scale words such as 値段のわりに. Unlike のに, it does not carry strong frustration.
Variants: 〜わりには、〜割に
