〜を経て

N1

via (a place); after going through (a process or period)

Formation: N + を経て/を経; N + を経た + N

This pattern has two uses. It can mean passing through a place on the way somewhere ('via'), or reaching a result only after going through a process, stage or length of time. It is formal and written, and typical of news, official documents and biographies. Used about time, it often refers to a long period, as in 長い年月を経て. 〜を通して/を通じて expresses a means or channel, or covers a whole period ('throughout'), while 〜を経て stresses the stages passed before arriving somewhere. 〜末に also means 'after', but it highlights a long struggle that ends in a final outcome, while 〜を経て sounds neutral and procedural.

Variants: 〜を経、〜を経た
