〜を契機に
N2taking (X) as a turning point or trigger (formal)
Formation: N + を契機に/を契機として/を契機にして; V-plain + の/こと + を契機に
Presents an event X as the turning point that set off a significant change or a new development. The main clause describes that change, such as rising awareness, a policy review or a new course in life. It is formal and written, typical of news reports, editorials and history. Compare 〜をきっかけに, which means the same but is everyday and can be used for small or personal triggers, and 〜を機に, which often suggests deliberately taking an occasion to make a change (定年を機に). を契機に sounds heavier and is best for major social or historical shifts.
Variants: 〜を契機として、〜を契機にして、〜を契機とする
