〜を機に

N1

taking (X) as an opportunity (to make a change)

Formation: N + を機に / を機として; V-plain past + の + を機に; これを機に

An event, usually a turning point such as marriage, retirement, a move, an anniversary or an illness, becomes the occasion for a new action or decision. The nuance is seizing a good moment to start or change something, so the main clause is usually a deliberate act. It is fairly formal but common in both speech and writing. Compare 〜をきっかけに, which is broader and more casual and also covers chance triggers and unplanned changes (偶然の出会いをきっかけに). 〜を契機に is the most formal and written, and is often used for large social or historical shifts.

Variants: 〜を機として、〜たのを機に、これを機に
