〜をもって

N1

with, by means of; as of (a time limit) (formal)

Formation: N + をもって; polite: N + をもちまして; N + をもってすれば / をもってしても

There are two main uses. As means or basis, it marks how something is done, usually with abstract nouns or documents (書面をもって通知する, 拍手をもって迎える, 誠意をもって対応する), not physical tools like chopsticks. As a time limit, it marks the point at which something ends or takes effect (本日をもって終了する). It is very formal and appears in official notices, ceremonies and announcements, and をもちまして is the polite spoken version. をもってすれば means 'with X, it would be possible', and をもってしても means 'even with X, it is not possible'. Compare 〜によって, the neutral way to mark means, and 〜を限りに, which marks only an ending and sounds more personal and decisive.

Variants: 〜をもちまして、〜をもってすれば、〜をもってしても、〜をもってする
