〜を余儀なくさせる
N1force, compel (someone into an unwanted action)
Formation: X が / は + Y に + N (action noun) + を余儀なくさせる
The causative counterpart of 〜を余儀なくされる: the subject is the cause (an event, a situation, a trend) that leaves someone with no option but to take an action they did not want. The subject is usually not a person but a circumstance, such as 不況, 災害 or 不祥事. It is stiff and written, found in newspapers, reports and analytical essays. In practice the passive 〜を余儀なくされる is far more common, because Japanese usually tells the story from the side of the one affected; choose 〜を余儀なくさせる when you want to put the cause in focus. The form 〜を余儀なくする has the same meaning.
Variants: を余儀なくさせた、を余儀なくする
