N1paying no attention to, unaffected by (others' worry, opposition, etc.)
Formation: N +
Describes someone carrying on as if a nearby concern did not exist, typically with nouns such as 心配, 反対, 期待, 不安, 批判 or 騒ぎ. It often has a critical tone (ignoring people's worries), but it can also just describe a contrast, as in a shop thriving while the economy is in recession. It is written or formal and usually describes someone else's behaviour from the outside. Compare 〜もかまわず (not caring about something, often appearances or other people's inconvenience), 〜を顧みず (disregarding a risk or sacrifice to oneself, often admirable) and 〜をものともせず (overcoming an obstacle, with praise); 〜をよそに stresses indifference or detachment from the surrounding situation.
Examples
Paying no heed to his parents' worry, the son is out having fun until late every night. -
Despite the residents' opposition, construction pressed steadily ahead. -
Unaffected by the recession, this shop has a queue every day.
