〜(よ)うが〜まいが
N1whether (one does) or not, (it makes no difference)
Formation: V-volitional + が + V-まい + が (also 〜と〜まいと); まい: godan dictionary form + まい (行くまい); ichidan stem or dictionary form + まい (見まい/見るまい); する→しまい/するまい/すまい; 来る→こまい/くるまい; usually the same verb repeated
Says that the result in the main clause is the same whether or not the action happens, often with a firm or indifferent tone. It is formal and emphatic, used in writing and in determined speech; the casual equivalent is 〜ても〜なくても. The main clause gives a decision, a fact or a judgment that does not change. Do not confuse it with 〜か否か, which asks whether something is the case rather than saying it doesn't matter. It is the yes/no version of 〜(よ)うが/(よ)うと, and is close to 〜にしろ〜にしろ.
Variants: 〜(よ)うと〜まいと
