N1because of, owing to (formal, literary)
A formal, slightly classical way to give a reason or cause, found in essays, speeches, literature and fixed expressions such as 若さゆえの過ち. It has a heavy, written tone and sounds out of place in casual conversation, where から or ので is used. The がゆえに form often stresses that the reason itself creates the result, sometimes ironically (being famous is exactly why she cannot go out freely). Compare 〜ばかりに, which is always about a bad result and carries regret, and 〜だけに, which means 'all the more because'; 〜ゆえに is a neutral statement of cause. On its own at the start of a sentence, ゆえに means 'therefore', as in logic and mathematics.
Variants:
Examples
