今となっては

N1

now (that things have come to this) / at this point

Formation: 今となっては + statement (also 今となると)

Means 'now that the situation has reached this point'. It contrasts the present with an earlier state, often implying that something ordinary has become rare, or that it is too late to change something. It often comes with regret or nostalgia, e.g. 今となってはどうしようもない. It is more reflective and stronger than a simple 今は.

Variants: 今となっては〜だ、今となると

そんな時代に、自分で本を選び入手し、集中して読む行為は、今となっては貴重な、情報を自律的に得る時間となる。

In such an era, the act of choosing a book yourself, getting hold of it and reading it with concentration becomes time for obtaining information independently, which is precious now.

今となっては modifies 貴重な: reading on your own is 'precious now, as things stand'. It implies a change: once ordinary, this kind of time has become rare because feeds and AI now hand us information. A plain 今は would just state the present. 今となっては highlights the contrast with the past. In other contexts it often carries regret ('it's too late now'), but here it simply marks how the situation has changed.
