Formation: V-dictionary form / change-noun + につれて (written: につれ)

Expresses proportional change: as one thing changes gradually, another changes with it. Both clauses must describe continuing change, and the main clause should not be a request or a will. It is similar to にしたがって and とともに. につれて is slightly more colloquial than にしたがって, and につれ is the written form.

ただ全国学校図書館協議会の学校読書調査では、小学4~6年生が今年5月に読んだ本は平均10・7冊だが中学、高校と進むにつれ減る。

However, in the Japan School Library Association's school reading survey, 4th- to 6th-grade elementary pupils read an average of 10.7 books this May, but the number falls as they move on to junior high and then high school.

中学、高校と進むにつれ減る: 'decreases as they progress to junior high, then high school'. につれ attaches to the dictionary form 進む and links one gradual change (moving up through school) to another (reading less). It is the written, slightly clipped form of につれて, typical of newspapers. The pattern requires both sides to be changes over time. It cannot be used for a single one-off result.
